The Human Genome Project Blasts Through Science!!

by Juan Miguel Franco (M)

The Human Genome Project, a project which started 13 years ago finally gives fruit to the work of scientists. This project was sponsored by the US Department of Energy and some organizations like the National Institute of Health. As the name explains, the objective of the whole project was to work on the Human Genome. Current developments in Technology have made it possible to finish the work 2 years before planned! Obviously people wonder: what the newton is that?(the expression was used by a scientist).

The question was asked to some experienced scientists like Dr. Issac Mac Newton and here is their answer: "As you may have noticed" said the scientist, "this project concerns the Human Genome, well the Human Genome is composed of almost 25,000 genes so the objective of the project was to identify these genes so that maybe in the near future we may have the option to identify the genes for each people and maybe you could help people take the medicine that better helps their genes". We ask for the comment of a civilian. Our street reporter: Jammal asked a young lady about her opinion in the project. Estela Guardia responded to the following question Jammal asked:

Jammal-"Do you know what the Human Genome Project is and if you do what do you think of it?"

Estela-"Yeah that, I think its a great because of all the good things it can give us."

Jammal-"Do you know what things it can give us?"

Estela-"Well it can help us solve genetic diseases."

Jammal-"You seem to know a lot about it."

Estela-"I got interested and started researching."

Jammal-"What can you tell us about the Human Genome?"

Estela-"The Human Genome is like a gigantic list of codes."

Jammal-"Yeah I know."

Estela-"And this list give us an idea of all the things we are made up."

Jammal-"Continue..."

Estela-"Great things could be done with all this info!"

Jammal-"Yeah you are right! Well Mrs. Estela thank you for this juicy (in information) interview."

Estela-"Thank you!"

That was Jammal our street reporter! And now back to the studio and meanwhile Jammal finds someone else to interview we'll get going. I will explain some more things about the Human Genome Project. Were was I... Right here we are. Apart from what I said about the other science stuff and what the Newton guy said there is a lot more of information.

Tthere is the controversial part of the project. Many people may say that this project is against many things. They say this because of many different points of view. One may say that that is to risky, others could say its a waste of pepperoni to make a veggie pizza....uumm sorry that wasn't supposed to be on my page its supposed to be on the page of Patty Spaghetti (we have new personnel, and there's this new boy that thinks like a chipmunk but that doesn't matter right now. Also there is the point of view that people say that it is to risky to perform experiments on fellow human beings. All the doubts and questions will be solved here! Another thing in the project was the adventure scientists must take to explore the new territory in the human genes. All the human genes have a genetic component that means that they have a type of codes (there is a different one on each person).

This may be a way for diseases to get activated, I say activated because maybe 3 generations before you, somebody had a genetically transmitted disease like cancer, you had the disease in your genes all the time but it was asleep so it didn't wake up. But maybe 3 generations after you somebody will have the disease. UUUmmm we're getting information that Jammal is back on the street so we're getting back to him so he can brief us on another interview:

Jammal-"Hello Mr. I am Jammal and I work for the local newspaper in the "Health" Edition. I am asking civilians about the Human Genome Project."

Mr.?-"O yeah that thingy, I saw that in the news the other day."

Jammal-"Mmmmm, okay but what about the project?"

Mr.?-"I think that it's good to know what's in our DNA."

Jammal-"What do you think about the risks?"

Mr.?-"What do I think about the risks? Well here it goes: I think that the risks aren't letting us get to the future."

Jammal-"OK, So you are in agreement with this project."

Mr.?-"Completely!"

Jammal-"Did you know about all the diseases that could be solved with the findings of this project? "

Mr.Allan-"I am aware of some things like Biotechnology companies are trying to solve on which genomes does the diseases act on."

Jammal-"O yeah that's right!"

Mr.Allan-"That's great because we could help people in the future."

Jammal-"Well thank you very much for this interview Mr. Allan."

Mr.Allan-"Thank you."

Jammal-"Yeah bye!"

Now we're back to the studio! Here's some more background information on cloning: Some other objectives to point out on which diseases it acts on. The road to all this may be long but there's is a highway you can take. Companies are trying to find diseases before it actually happens. Well thank you for reading this article and I hope we will meet together on the next edition!

Conclusion:
This subject alarms us greatly because of the things we could create by using the project. The two different points of view are rather different, or opposite, so they can't get together to form a plan the benefits both parts. One of the points of view is that things like the Human Genome Project should be eliminated. People say this because they believe it is an act against religion or nature itself. Just imagine a world in which one could go to a hospital and tell the doctor just how one would like their offspring to be... "Oh, yeah! I want my daughter to measure this much, have this hair color, look like this, etc. Also, I want her to be free of any genetic disease that I may pass to her." People fear that this could change the way that we live.

The other point of view is that they should continue with the project, because this is going to assure a better future (as far as health goes). If someone would like to investigate more about this, I would seriously recommend it. You can learn a lot of new things and be aware of how genetic advancements could help or hurt humanity.
